I think people in the past have used a bit of aluminum foil to help block excess light. The Repti Glo are also spiral shaped and don't stick out as much.

new question:

distance of the bulbs.

i have a room thermometer that takes the temp of the basking area. here's the timeline:
8:00 pm - 92F
8:22 pm - 98F
8:32 pm - 100F
8:42 pm - 100F
8:52 pm - 100F

question is: will this temp be constant at this height? i don't want to burn my turt. also, should i move the heat lamp higher, or is 100F for basking okay?

distance of the heat lamp (60 watts) from basking area: 12 inches
distance of the UVB lamp (26 watts) from basking area: 15 inches

thanks!

It is pretty warm for small turtles, so I would move it up. Is the temp directly under the lamp? What's your room temperature?

the temperature is under the lamp. is it better if i exchange the position of the UVB and the heat lamp?

I'm not sure if that would make much of a difference. It's good that its a large basking area, he can move around more.

Great to know. Keep an eye on them if it's still that warm.

basking temp is now just 94. water temp is 80 (without water heater). ambient temp (all lights OFF) is around 90.

new question: what to do when the water is too hot?

the temp of the water is 84F or 29C. is this okay? i'm thinking of ways to lower the temp to 80 or 78 F. any ideas? basking temp is 97F/32C. too hot?

is dumping ice on the tank okay? (without the turtle inside).

How big is the tank again? For smaller tanks, frozen bottles will work. Try to bring both temperatures down... keeping your room temperature down would be the easier way to manage this.
