Let me introduce a rodent... by name Kumberland
Image
One day ago (yesterday evening) I have found a very small wound on his skin. It was surprised me but I thought that it just because of a sharp edge of smthing inside the tank or it is some kind of skin lesions (here was a bleeding...) It was treated by application of Solcoseryl jelly for the night with a very good result.

Today morning I had a time to clean up their aquaterrarium. How it was before...

As you can see I use a thermostab for the cable...

But today I have found first this small mark...

After a short inspectation of the cable I have found some more else...

And else...

As the result I have bought today a new heater by Aquael company. It is a plastic aquarium heater with thermoregulation 150W.
It is shatter-resistant casing
modern, wide range thermostat
European safety standart (IP68)
modern flat shape
functional double-sided hanger
protects fish or turtle :) against burns
built-in thermal switch
small sizes

I don`t know how it works - good or bad, hope that it will be a good replacement for the cable.
P.S. Now I think that Kumber has a wound because of an electric shock current (it was so small and perfect round wound).

That's a nice heater! I think it will work better since there is less for the turtle to bite. I've only seen the cable type heater used for aquariums with plants and fish only.

I knew nothing about types of heater when I was in an aquarium shop at first time. I have bought RES suddenly :) And a consulter tolds that he is sure - exactly the cable will be perfect for turtles :)

Was that heater supposed to be covered by gravel? As for his little injury... I've seen these "callus" before but I'm not sure what causes them. They usually go away without issue.

I'm not Sherlock Holmes... but I`m sure that I exchange water and wash the tank every 3-4 days. So, the heater cable was perfectly undamaged 3 days ago. And I inspect both turtles every evening before they going to sleep. No one "callus" on Earl`s skin during all 9 months as the turtle at my home and it is a first time when I noticed it on a smaller turtle. The marks matches just only Kumber`s beak.
Today the wound is absolutely perfect healed and his skin has no one wound else. (To tell the truth, I think that Kumber may be can be a girl turtle)
By the way, they dig up the cord of cable.

I've seen cable heaters in planted fish tanks and they are always covered by gravel or in some cases organic dirt. I guess some aquatic plants like their roots warm.

To tell the truth, the cable heater can heat water too much better than tube type heater. It can heat a hole water in aquaterrarium with higher temperature. This winter lay harsh and heavy over the lands of Moscow: deadly winds, a heavy burden of snow, so deep, brooding and dangerous... (just for understanding :) ) So, the cable was too much better for turtles all winter time. I think it just needs in some type of double bottom, may be. But I have no time for make smthing like this now and have decided to buy another standart heater (more safety for turtles) because of spring time now.
In January Kumber sick with a heavy pneumonia more than 2 weeks. It was scary to look at the little turtle; another small turtle dead at this time. They needed in 30 celcius degrees of water - the cable supported this temperature of water. It is a certainty.
I am sure that in next winter I will use two types of heaters in aquaterrarium. It will be large tank at the time and I`d like to see a double bottom there for the cable heater + some type of tube heater inside the tank as an additional heater.
It is clear to see that the small scripta troosti needs in a little bit higher temperature than Earl :) Really. I don`t worry about Earl because the turtle can live in slightly more large diapason of temperature than troosti.
