Canister hose length

I have a sunsun hw 302 canister filter. The company says it can and will work even at the same height as the tank. The only way I can get It to work is to have the filter tilted , I feel like that is because of the hose's being so long. If I cut them so that its closer with less distance for the water to have to move will that help it? I feel like its not working as well as it should. I have everything as tight and air prof as I can

I would not have the filter tilted. The hoses for canisters are meant to be trimmed, to eliminate any major bends and kinks.

I've got no idea without pics but I do leave some slack in the hoses. It really doesn't need it, and there is no way for it to get any bends.

Best thing to do is to raise the tank/stand. If that is an issue, you can still have the filter upright and not directly below the tank. You will have to shorten the hoses. Canisters work with gravity and priming might be tricky but it will still work.
