Filter for a half filled aquarium

Are there any filters that will run without the tank being completely filled? And this is purely a made-up example but for instance, a 100 gallon aquarium that is filled halfway? I have had trouble in the past with filters running unless the aquarium was filled to the brim. Thanks for any input that you can provide

Canisters will work, but priming might take a bit more work. Hang-ons can work, but will need to be re-primed after power loss and that could be problematic if you're not there when it happens.

I would say go with a canister filter. They have the ability move the intake down and the spray bar/return near the water line so it's just super noisy. There are some canister filters with prime tools or self prime that might make it a little bit easier.
