Hi everyone. I'm in the market for a new filter and I'm planning on getting a RENA Filstar XP3. Do I need to buy anything extra for the filter or does it come with everything I need? I want to have the best filteration possible.

Some people like to play around with the filter configuration, but the filter does come with Mechanical filtration and Chemical filtration. You'll need to purchase some sort of biological media to fill a basket with, there's many brands of this, but I personally use Biomax by Seachem.

There's room in the bio media basket for two packages of something. I put in a package each of stars and rings and they work fine.
Every month you'll have to replace the micro filter (the white pad at the top) and the charcoal (bio chem zorb). You might as well order some of these as the month comes around very quickly. I get mine off the internet from Pet Smart where the prices are pretty good.

Check before you buy it. Sometimes as a promotion biomedia (ceramic rings) will be included. If they aren't, then get whatever you like.

I just set up my new XP3. so far I love it. I did order extra rings. I was told I needed more than what came with it. By the way glad I did None came with it. I called customer service at bigalsonline. They are very helpful when you need to ask them questions about anything they sell. Prices are great customer service A1 I got my XP3 from them for $99.00 everywhere else I checked was around $200.00
