General Care Discussion :: Do you cuddle with your turtle?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed May 28, 2008 2:08 am   Do you cuddle with your turtle?

Kind of a wierd question, but was wondering if you ever let your turtle snuggle with you? I have found that Buddy sometimes will rest on my chest while I watch TV and I put my hand over him to keep him nice and warm. He seems to enjoy it. Any of you do anything similar? I used to have a 5 ft Boa Constrictor and I would let him sleep in my bed down at my feet. he liked the warmth. That was before I had a wife and two dogs to take up my whole bed hahaha.

The only time Sisqo want's to cuddle is when I am trying to fix the pants in his tank. He will swim up and resy in the palm of my hand. When he's out of the tank, not so much. It's like he's on a mission if he's out of his tank. Kind of strange, I wish I knew what he was looking for.

Neptune loves to hang out me. If we are watching a movie he love to hang out under the blankets, he makes a little hideout it super cute. Neptune also will climb up and hang out my chest! ( I thought I was the only one) My turtle is very social he likes coming out the tank and hang out with people.

I never thought about doing it, I think Rexi would want to run and check out other things than just hang around.

Doc_Moore_J: You are doing some risky business allowing your turtle to snuggle with you. Remember, ALL turtles have the possibility of carrying and transmitting Salmonella and even though you may not get sick, your dogs can fall very ill very quickly if they come in contact with Salmonella. You need to make sure your turtle has been cleaned and completely dried before taking him out, and you MUST sanitize every surface or piece of cloth or skin he comes in contact with. A healthy adult can fight off Salmonella, but even a healthy dog has less of a chance of coming out alive.

Most people keep turtles as "look but don't touch" pets.

Miso pees on me when I hold him for too long.

Tobiko used to go to sleep inside my pocket or in my hand

The tortoises like to snuggle in my Tshirt if I'm lying down, but then after a while they both leave really fast and I find that they both crapped on me. (Warmth equals faster metabolism?)

I find that with turtles, sometimes their actions may seem like one thing but are really the opposite. While they may seem comfortable, in reality the turtle may be scared out of its mind and is just staying still in the hopes that you won't eat it.
Turtles (at least all the ones I've ever seen) aren't social in the same respect as mammals and have no benefit from cuddling.
I hate to be a pessimist but I agree with computergremlin that the risk of salmonella and the added stress to the turtle probably makes cuddling a bad idea.

small fry likes looking at my pc. if i put rock music he would sleep to it but if i turn it off he would look at me and if i put it back on he would sleep. its always the same song that keeps him that way. kitty nails does the same thing but she likes those soft songs. if i put her away from my speakers she would put her head closer tot he speaker to listen which is pretty cool.

I "play" with Sylar in his tank sometimes...I hand feed him, or sometimes I lead him around with my finger. If I have my hand in his tank for some reason (putting something in, taking something out...etc) he comes over to investigate and will kinda nuzzle my hand. If I hold my palm out he will swim into it sometimes. I think he feels more secure in his element and therefore more comfortable with me. He doesn't really seem to love being held (he just kinda kicks his legs) and if I put him on the floor he picks a direction and runs. I really only pick him up if I need to check him out, or if I am taking him outside for some sun (or maybe for a few pictures!) My turtles not very cuddly, but I respect his independant reptile attitude. he's a cool little dude! 8)

Kash will sit in my lap for hours while I'm stroking him with one hand and typing on this forum with the other.

The RESs will only sit still for a while. Sandy is the best because she doesn't try to run off your hands while you are holding her.

You are lucky. If I tried to get Hurley to snuggle he would beat the crap out of me. He just wants to run and explore when he is out of his tank (which isn't often, we have cats). In his tank he hates being held or picked up. He's a tough dude.

You are soooo lucky!!!!!!! I am pretty sure my turtles hate my guts... except for when I need to feed them... they don't love me... they love what I can do for them!
