Wow that looks beautiful! Are you going to stain the rim or leave it natural?

HAHA...I caught a moth in the house and while trying to catch it flew into my tank and Ike ate him fast as heck. Anyway, I plan on painting it black to match the base of the tank.

Ok, here is another update for Mike and Ike's tank:

Image
Here is a shot of the tank with the rim finished and painted black. Still needs another coat of paint and some detailing done to it to hide the wood

Image
Here is a closer shot of the rim and the rest area with a few more stones glued down

Image
Instead of egg crate I decided to create a frame with wire mesh. It will have a fastener on all for corners to secure it to the tank

Image
Here is the stand for the tank in its infant stages. I am going to add a support down the middle on the back and add a cover for the back to hide the cords and what not

Where is the mesh cover going? If it's going between the lights and the floor of the basking area, you might have a problem. The reason most of us use egg crate is because mesh filters out a lot of the UVB light.

The UVB light wont be on the mesh. My UVB light covers the width of the tank and then the mesh will sit next to it. The heat lamp is the only thing that will be sitting on the mesh. To give you an idea, look at the picture and imagine the light pushed to the edge of the tank and that mesh frame sitting next to it.

I think I understand. Just make sure that the UVB light will be set up over the basking area and not over the water and that the net is not under it

Okay, here is another update on the tank. I was able to finish a little bit. I will be posting pics of the basking area with reptile carpet installed tomorrow. Enjoy!

Image
Okay as you can see the rim was painted black and needs some sanding and some touch ups to smooth out the paint. The mesh also needs to be cleaned to remove the paint so that it is clean and free from paint. The open space to the left of the mesh will be where the UV light sits.

Image
This is a picture showing the rest area being worked on and the mesh to cover this area. The mesh will sit right over this area flush with the edge.

Image
This is the rest area completed with all of the rock secured.

Thanks and if anyone has ANY suggestions, I would love to hear them. Thanks to all who have giving me my ideas and any feedback I have received.

That looks wonderful so far! I can't wait to see when it's finished. If you're planning on covering the whole top, make sure and leave holes for the light clamps and filtration and heater chords.
