Hi Joel, cooked bacon is definite no. Shrimp and cooked meat once a week is also too much.

Turtle Age: About 5 years old
Turtle Size: 7.5"
Turtle habitat: 39gal acrylic tank(Temporary upgrade from a 10gal)

Sunday: Pellets
Monday: About 5 pellets, red leaf lettuce, small piece of cuttlebone
Tuesday: Pellets
Wednesday: About 5 pellets, red leaf lettuce, small piece of cuttlebone
Thursday: Pellets
Friday: About 5 pellets, red leaf lettuce, small piece of cuttlebone
Saturday: Pellets

(The above feeding schedule is a bit off since my RES doesn't get Pellets 2 days in a row, meaning that each week the diet is pushed forward by 1 day so every other day she gets pellets.)

Treats: My RES receives a small treat once a week which may be a whatever safe fruit or vegetable we have in our fridge. It can also be live prey which is rare since I don't go to the pet store too often.
My non-human family consists of...

1 RES-- Mary Jane
1 Ball Python-- Rukiya
2 Cockatiels-- Chapis and Stewie

Offering krill, shrimp, and worms on a weekly basis is a lot of protein for a little turtle. You should cut back to just pellets (reptomin and wardley is a good mix, not the others though) and offer the meaty treats once every 3-4 weeks. A diet too high in protein will result in pyramiding which puts undue stress on their organs and shortens their life span.

Hatchlings and Juvies, need more protien then greens, I've read every caresheet I could find, they all say the same thing, I've also talk to a couple breeders, my vet, and a friend who has a degree in Herpotology and they all said the same thing, Turtles start life as carnivours, as they get older the turn to herbivours, the best possible feeding ratio is; Hatchlings and Juvies: 50% protien, 25% pellet, 25% greens/veggies, Adults 50% greens/veggies, 25% pellet, 25% protein, trust me on this, the first thing i do when i get a new animal is research everything I can about the species..

Sunday`1/2 head of pellets for each turtle, cuttlebone
Monday` " "
Tuesday " "
Wedensday " "

Friday " "
Saturday " "
Treats (and frequency) Veggies at least every second day, fruit once/wk
Wow, does Fred ever love blueberries...will only give once/mo as recommended on this site. Grapes an all time favorite (without seeds!!)
Just figured out that if you dry out thin carrot peelings you can break them up and they FLOAT, rather than sinking to bottom and the guys get them right away!!
Kids leave but their pets linger!

All of the below information was last updated on 6/10/2011...

Name: Niko (knee-co)
Age: 2 years 8 months
Size: 4.5"
Weight: 151 grams
Habitat: 30g tank (Temp tank til I get funds for bigger...)
Habitat Additions: Turtle Topper (pictured below)

Image

Sunday: 10 - 12 Mazouri Pellets
Monday: 6 Reptomin Sticks
Tuesday: 10 - 12 Mazouri Pellets
Wednesday: 6 Reptomin Sticks
Thursday: 10 - 12 Mazouri Pellets
Friday: 6 Reptomin Sticks
Saturday: 10 - 12 Mazouri Pellets

Niko also gets 5 rosies once a month if I remember to buy them. I also try to toss in veggies when I remember / if I have them. I do have to admit that one thing I'm slacking in is the calcium department, I honestly cannot remember the last time I gave Niko cuttlebone. I do plan on getting back in to the swing of things with him, I just wish I could find a good calcium supplement that I dont have to dig in to like you do with cuttlebone for the backing.

Turtle Age (Aprox) Unsure , maybe 1/ 1/2-2 years.
Turtle Size (SCL) about 4 1/2 in
Turtle habitat (indoor/outdoor)indoor 50 gallon long tank

I have only had her about 5 days now. I have been giving her about 8-10 pellets everyday and lots of lettuce.

The day we got her she had 3 tiny goldfish, has had some shredded carrots(she loves them), and offered blueberries but only ate a tiny bit.

How do i know if i am feeding her to much or to little? She is a beggar and the second I wake up and im moving around she is at the front of the tank following me for food lol. I normally tear up lettuce into like 1/2 size pieces and drop about 6-8 of those in there. Is this enough? When I come home from work its all gone. Or is that too much

Another question i have is does it matter that I feed her everything at around 10:30 am and nothing else for the rest of the day? Thats ok right? I am very new to this so getting portions and everything right is confusing to me.

I also always keep cuttlebone in the tank but she doesnt eat it to much.

Monday: Reptomin
Tuesday: Turtle Jello
Wednesday: Reptomin and cuttlebone

Turtle Age: approximately 2-1/2 yrs (adopted turtle)
Turtle Size: 7 inches
Habitat: Indoor

Greens every other day, either collard or romaine lettuce, she is ignoring the lettuce but I'm trying.

On the days she doesn't get the greens I feed her a mix of various pellets along with shredded carrots and broccoli slaw. She loves that. Every third feeding I add some dried shrimp.

Every other week I give her two blueberries or a small piece of mango. Once a month I give her a small piece of apple, she devours it.

She gets cuttlebone pieces every few days.

I just saw the recipe for turtle shots and I'm going to try that.

This isn't exactly what I do every single day, but it's a basic run down. They get a different food every day. I use Reptomin three in one food, which has calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate in it, and I also use gammarus pellets. I add in romaine lettuce from time to time. I've attempted carrots, but since they don't float I'm afraid my turtles might accidentally eat their substrate. (They didn't even try to eat the carrots anyways). Turtles, especially RES are picky, and if you keep feeding them the same thing every day, they get hooked on it.

For the amount, my turtles are two inches so their stomach is about the size of heads, and I feed them three to four pieces of baby shrimp or baby krill, or three pieces of pellets. For the gammarus, the pellets are vary large so I break three in half. I don't give them pellets and the shrimp/krill together in one sitting because they don't ever eat it all.

I feed them once or twice a day depending on how they act. I always feed them in the early morning. If they act hungry in the evening, I give them a smaller feeding. If they beg, I don't give them anymore food.

Once a turtle starts getting larger than four inches, you should feed them every other day.

Indoor habitat:
Sunday- Grass pellets with romaine lettuce to graze on.
Monday- baby shrimp
Tuesday- grass pellets
Wednesday- baby krill
Thursday- gammarus pellets
Friday- baby shrimp
Saturday- grass pellets

Like I said I don't feed the exact same thing every single Monday. I might try a new food for kicks, or give them lettuce instead. I like to keep is varied and different as much as possible.

Here's a trick- Your finger nails are about the same size as your turtle's head. If you still aren't sure how much your turtle should eat in one sitting, then see which of your nails is the same size as their head. Just line up the pellets/pieces on your nail to see how much could fit. That's how much you should feed your turtle. After a while you'll be so accustomed to feeding your turtle that it'll be easier to estimate and you won't need this anymore.
