Hi

I bought a tiny RES...about 1.5 inches in diameter. I have left it with another bigger turtle, of 4 inches shell diameter. However, this small turtle doesn't eat its food and it is always sleeping. I have provided it with necessary basking and adequate temperature. I am very concerned. What should i do?

Hi, welcome to the forum. You should never house bigger RES with smaller ones. The big ones will bully the little ones, eat all the food and even hurt them. Can you describe your set up, tank size, water temp, basking temp etc? Do you have another tank? You'll probably need to separate them.

I agree, please separate them and work on maintaining proper diets and habitats first.

I dunno the exact size...the tank is 1ftX1.5ftX9inches. I give it spirulina pellets everyday. I have set the basking temperature at 28 degree celsius.

If its Width: 18" (45.72cm) 1.5 ft
Height: 9" (22.86cm)
Depth: 12" (30.48cm) 1ft

then that would mean its only about 8-9gallons way too small for a RES. You need at least a 55g but eventually 90-120g tank in the long run.

Hi, what is the water temperature? Can you keep it at a steady 80F? Can he open his eyes? Does he swim at all?

For trying to get him to eat, try bits of boiled white chicken meat, canned tuna, live earthworms, meal worms or minnows. Try to entice him with smell and movement.

If he's separated in his own tank, he needs to have the proper equipment in it, just like the other turtle. You might bump up the water to 82F for now. Basking area temp should be 90 - 91F.

Are his eyes swollen? If so, he can't see to eat. If he can see, you could try small, cut up pieces of earthworm, which are better than the meal worms. If his eyes area closed, try holding bits of tuna or sardines in front of his nose if the water and see if he's got any interest in that.

Would you be able to get him into some sunlight? You can also try Zoo Med Turtle Eye Drops. He won't likely eat if he can't see.

If the outside temperatures are good (around 75-85), then some sunlight might be good.
