It shouldn't be that hard... can you dig your fingernails into it?

My RES aren't into it either. I would just dust some pellets or make the jello treat if you want to add some extra calcium.

i'm scared for my turt dumbork. yesterday, i put a piece of cuttlebone in the tank (i rigidly followed the directions). after he bit the floating cuttlebone piece, he started rubbing his eyes and mouth like crazy!

i don't know if this is normal, and after i put a new piece of cuttlebone, he still would't touch it!

i'm afraid that he'll scratch his eyes out because of the rubbing. i discontinued using cuttlebone for now. i need some advice about this.

any comments?
this will be highly appreciated.

thanks!

btw, dumborkis a 9mo. old res.male.

thanks.

He might have gotten some blow back when he bit it. Not sure though. Hopefully someone with a little more experience can give you a better answer.

Is he bumping into things like he can't see or not seeing pellets that are right in front of his nose?

at first he is bumping into the wall of the tank. when i dropped some veggies he didn't see it immediately. he enticed him with some pellets and i have to dangle it in front of him (usually i just drop the pellets in the water).

when i dropped some veggies again, he didn't see it. it was still there after i left it for 1 hour.

thanks for your reply.

Did you remove the backing? How big was the piece?

yes, i removed the backing (will try to post pictures later). the piece i put in the tank is as big as a bottle cap (i rounded the edges). will try to put again a piece later when i got home so that i can monitor whether he will eat it (and whether he will still rub his mouth) or not.

thanks.

Cuttlebone is a hit or miss. It would be nice if they all take it (it's good for trimming beaks too) but some are not that interested. I would make sure you are using a reputable pellet and if you have the time, occasionally dust some of them.

My turtle hated cuttlebone but then learned to love it. But he makes a huge mess with it and leaves small particles of cuttle bone on the ground. Would that effect the water quaility?

You should be fine though you might want to net out the uneaten pieces.

If I leave the uneaten pieces will they affect water quaility?
