Hi. I am new to this site so I would like to tell you something about my turtle. 43 years ago my son asked for a turtle for his 5th birthday and we bought him a slider complete with a little turtle bowl. The kind with the plastic palm tree in the middle. Well today Turtle (never named her, didn't think she would last long) lives on our deck in the summer and has her own room in the basement in the winter. A large plastic storage container with a doorway cut in one side and 4 inches of water serves as her pond. She is 9 inches long and weighs 4 pounds. She has laid eggs several times. We feed her smelts, shrimp, fruit, lettuce and cat food. Her favorite being cooked sweet potatoes. She comes when called and loves to sit on our feet. Never really had a health problem with her. The only advice I can give is be careful when you buy your kids a pet. You never know how long they will last.
