Thanks for all of the positive feedback, I am really happy with the look of the tank. I still want to get a better filter. I have the Fluval 406 at the moment and it works great but I really want to get the FX5. I do about a 50% water change about once a month and clean the filter, change the carbon, after about a month the water starts to get a yellow tint to it so its usually a good sign to give the water a good change and to scrape the inside fo the glass for hard water stains. Since I have a couple of bubblers in the tank I get a lot of water staining on the glass. I eventually want to build a large ATBA for him so I can just fill the tank all of the way.

Once I build that I will post more pics. I also need to get more fo the stacking stones to put down in the tank. they are easy to remove and clean and it doesnt look like a bare bottom tank anymore. Plus with the bubbler under the stones it kinda gives a cool effect.

Anyone ever tried using a bubbler with sand??

The yellow tint might be the tannins from the wood. Did this happen before you added it into the tank?

I think the OP mention that the wood was fake. Sounds like either algae or bacterial bloom that causing the yellow water.
Is the tank near direct sunlight? How long are your lights on?

@Steve. Devilduck is correct the wood is fake, completely fabricated piece, its a decoration I got at Petsmart.

@Devilduck The tank is not in direct sunlight but it is positioned next to a window. The window has both blinds and light blocking curtains but there is always some light that gets in through the edges. The lights are on from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

The yellowish tint is very slight but I can tell especially when I stand above the tank and look into it.

Hey Steve and VeipaCray I saw this locked link you have on this area of the forum under Build thread collection. Over the last few months I have seen several folks post their builds and on here. Any chance you can update that thread and please include mine. I would like to have mine listed under "Completed but tinkering" lol

Yes, I will try to update it soon... there's a lot to sort through and back then we were trying to figure how best to do it and present it.

Have you had any problems with air being sucked into the filter? It looks like the bubble bar is right near the intake in the one picture.

Nice setup and deep colors, I like it.

Funny that you should ask that. The bubble bar was actually a flexible bubble hose that I had positioned under the stacking stones. After 3 months of fighing my turtles interior designer tendencies I finally replaced it. it was a weekly battle, I would place the hose under the stones and he would push the stones out of the way and dig up the hose. for the most part since it was flexible I didnt have any issues with air going into the intake, On occasion I would hear a sputter or two from the output where a little air had been sucked up but most of the time it was never an issue.

I replaced the hose with a long HEAVY bubble bar that he cant move so far no issues at all. He still pushes the rocks around some but now that I have added a curculation pump to the tank (an Aqueon 900 - designed for a 55-90 gallon tank) the turtle spends most of his attention "walking against the wind" and basking hanging out on his log. He still swims a lot too and now with the extra current he gets a good workout when he gets right in the path of the flow.

Well I FINALLY got an upgrade for Franklin!

Here is the old setup

Image

75 gallon tank (a steal for $134 brand new) and the Fluval FX5! I recycled the biomax that was in the Fluval 406 and put it into the new FX5. It's amazing how much wider the tank is! Franklin used to have to squeeze in between the tank wall and log to get by. How he glides by it without even having to turn in the slightest.

After washing it out and making sure it was squeaky clean I started in on the task of getting the cling on the back of the tank. Let me tell you it is SO MUCH EASIER to put that thing on when the tank is empty and on its side! LOL Next the tank went on the stand and the light stands in place underneath the tank. I upgraded from two clamp lamps to a the large dual deep dome setup and moved one of the old clamp lamps to the other side so that I had even lighting across the tank. I got the intake and output set up and measured so that they were at their furthest points in the tank and placed the heater close to the intake.

Image

Next I got the log back in place the air disk and air wall centered and then placed my stacking stones in the tank to fill in the spaces. (I had 4 packs of the stones and even purchased a 5th one and there STILL was a ton of left over room) Lamps in place and all of the wires fed where I wanted them

Image

Time for some Water!

Add one VERY Happy Turtle!

I wanted to take a moment and again thank the countless people who have posted and replied on these forums about the FX5 and all of the needs and how to care for our turtles. My little guy would still be in this if I hadn't come across this site

Looks great! The fake wood looks real nice in there. Is that a CD in his tank?
