im looking at building a outdoor pond this summer. how deep does it need to be for my res to be in all year round? with out heaters? i live in montgomery alabama.

Pond has to be at least 2 feet deep but Id aim for a spot to be 3 feet deep.

I'd even make it deeper if you could, and make sure the bottom is lined with leaves or mud or something so they can hibernate if necessary. The deeper it is, the warmer it stays, but if you get a freeze, it's still going to be super cold.

Oh, and if it might freeze, get a bubbler or six. My two kept open spots in my pond when there was an inch of ice everywhere around where the bubbles were.

thanks. i was planning on going 5 foot at the deepest point with a foot of mud at the bottom. i just wanted to make sure that would be deep enough for them during the winter. and i will make sure to post pics of the steps i take this summer. but first i need to finish the inside duel 55 im working on.

Really mud isnt necessary for them to hibernate. Just as long as a spot is left open for gasses to escape from pond, the leaves if any are fine. You really can just have a bare bottom.

is the pond for any of the other 6 ( :shock: ) turtles too? i think It would b very interesting to see how they'd get along with each other.

all depends on how they get along. i hope that once i get finished it will be big enough to house most of them. but i will have to see.
