General Care Discussion :: Baby RES dying..

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Apr 03, 2013 5:45 pm   Baby RES dying..

My baby RES Otis is very sick and I'm almost positive he's going to die. Symptoms all point to a severe RI. Hasn't eaten in two weeks, basks all day while asleep, sleeps sitting in the water if he isn't basking, swims lopsided and kind of floats... I have him quarantined to a mini tank with uv and basking bulbs, maracyn and crushed pellets in his water. I can't afford the only local herp vet as it is $75 for the visit alone and I'm a college student. I hate watching him die, this is the saddest thing...anyone have any advice or similar stories?

I'm sorry for the hatchling, I hope there's a chance to him. When they are sick I've heard is good to raise a little bit the water temperature, by the way what is the temperature right now? Is there any wind current in the room?
Also, 75 bucks is really expensive IMO.

What are the water temperatures? Ask the vet if you can pay in installments... does your school have a veterinary department?

It stays about 79 for my sick one, not really sure about at night time though. Vet won't do installments, and no school vet service :( I'm really sad. I'm basically watching him die

Dont' give up yet! There are some home remedies you can try.

First: what's the wattage on his heat lamp? Make sure his basking site is in the high 90s.
Second: Water Temperature: bring that up!! Bring it into the high 80s.

Higher temperatures promotes their immune system to kick in!

As far as oral baytril, the vet said injections are the best way to get him better faster. I raised his temperature by putting a heating pad under him at night and a stronger basking lamp in the day. I just have him in a small little thing so he isn't infecting my other baby. I cried every time I inject him so far, it's so sad because he doesn't know I'm doing it to make him feel better!!!:(

As of now he has had four doses. I noticed him "coughing?" alot today, just opening his mouth wide with an occasional squeak... Is my baby gonna get through this?:(

We're all pulling for him! Has there been any other symptom changes? Baytril is known to suppress appetite. How big is he?

Steve, he already hasn't eaten in over two weeks... I'm so scared! He's only about as big as a half dollar coin. He's reeallllly tiny. We got another turtle at the same time, same size and everything. Did everything exactly the same with the two, and the other turtle is thriving, and already much bigger than Otis!
