Habitat - Indoor :: My 240 gal build

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

It will take a while for your 240 to cycle by itself ( you can use feeder fish and throw in some anacharis ) if you use the current fx6 the beneficial bacteria inside your filter will speed up the process. However, this is not going to bother your turtles. Sliders are pretty hardy and a cycling tank won't do any harm to them at all. Go ahead and throw your turtles in. You might see cloudy water for a while but that's normal once the cycle is complete it will be clear. Remember to test your water to make sure the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels are good. For a 240 gallon you will need another filter with the fx6. You will also need more heaters, I would say two more 300 watt jagers.

10-4 already have plans to buy another fx6, but I think that I may have some time. I only have 4 inches of turtle shell. The 2 more heaters, I had planned on getting 1 more but I like the redundancy of 2.

You know what, I just looked it up and the 300 watt is rated for 159 - 264 gallons, so 2 heaters would do just fine! Yes you would probably be fine with one fx-6 for now since they're just hatchlings. If price is no object then do look into eheim filters. They make a mean classic canister that alone would filter your whole tank with 4 turtles in it. Also a 2080 filter would work well in combination with an fx-6. It's the same price and uses less energy and gives you more space for filter media.

Lol, yes I love eheim! FX-5 used to be bang for the buck $200 but in the last couple months they shot it up to $300 + now that's just insane, I'd rather get an eheim!

Pro III 2080 - http://www.bigalspets.com/pro-3-2080-ca ... ilter.html
Classic 2262 - http://www.bigalspets.com/classic-canis ... -2262.html

use coupon code 3REEF10 to get 10% off. I'd go for for the second one it's just bad [---] :>

No matter what you do, don't go for Renas. Their price is really attractive and once upon a time they used to be really good quality but now they're just crap. I had to return two XP3's even though brand new, both leaked as soon as i plugged them in.

I like that pro 3 but it has half the water pump that the fx6 has. Does it have that much more media to make up for it. I considered that the second filter I would run virtually all bio media anyway.

flow rate for pro 3 is 450 gph has space for 12 L of media, fx 6 is 563 gph and has 5.9L of media.

idk man I used it when I got mine, I got a 2075 though. They also have fx6 for 339 that's not bad either! but 12 L of media on the 2080 is bad [---] :) Although, you will have to purchase media separately. you dont have to use brand name media though, you can just put different stuff in there with some carbon. Rena xp3 media is pretty cheap you could just buy some of that.

I am pretty convinced that the second filter is going to virtually all bio media no matter which brand it ends up being. The only thing not bio will be mechanical pads to filter prior to the bio.

Yes. It is stock fx6 set up, I am adding some more carbon, more bio etc. There is a ton already but I am switching to the bulk carbon and away from the carbon pads.

Bulk carbon is effective and cheap. I use the marineland kind myself

The turtles would be fine if the water is not cycled.
