Hi,
A friend of mine is giving me a 55 gallon tank with a stand for free. It leaks but she thinks some aquarium silicone will fix it. I plan on purchasing a 125 gallon tank in the next 6 months. I have a stand for a 125 gallon. So my game plan was to first by a large filter that will handle an 125 gallon tank and use it on the 55 gallon tank. I also wanted to purchase heater the same. This was I would not have all the costs at once. So this leads to my question. What is a good filter for a large 125 gallon tank? Is the FX5 a good filter? I have been searching the group past posts but kinda getting information overload for a newby. I would love a few recommendations from those of you who have large tanks. This would be for one female RES currently 4.5 inches. :msgreen: Thanks!!

fx5 in a 300 gallon tank. It works well and is real easy to clean. You might have a hard time finding one as they have been upgraded. They are now called an FX6. I did the same thing and used it in a 40 gallon tank till I got my bigger one. If you can afford one I would buy the FX6.

300 gallon indoor stock tank, FX6 & FX5 filters. Mega-Ray 100w UVB bulb.

Congrats on the new tank. Fixing a silicone leak cannot be done simply by applying silicone over an existing seal. They do not adhere well to each other and will not stop the leak. Re-sealling is straightforward but time consuming. You'll need aquarium grade silicone (about $14 for 2 tubes), razors + holder (about $2), masking tape (about $3) and rubbing alcohol (about $3)

The FX5 is a great filter, probably the best deal out there when it was around $200. Sadly, it's not anymore and some are looking at the XP4 or SunSun (Chinese filters) if they are on a budget.

Thanks that was my next question because hubby didn't think you could just silicone over the old layer and I told him I will ask. I will also look into the XP4 & Sunsun. Thanks everyone for your help. I am just loving my turtle.
