O.k. skimmer is now ready for his 3rd tank in 2 yrs. We started out in a 20, then went to a 40 gallon at a year old and now he is 6 inches and ready for his final forever tank. I would like to get a 100 gallon, but don't think that's possible due to it not fitting in my car and lifting it to the stand, etc. It is just my 11 yr old and myself to set it up, so weight is an issue.

My question is, when I do get the new tank and get water in it, should I just un pulg the filter from the old tank and leave Skimmer in that for a day or so with no filtration? I know the new tank will have to cycle for a few days before putting him in. I am going to try and add some of the water in the old tank to the new to help with the cycling.

Any suggestions?

When I set up my 300 gallon stock tank I moved the fx5 to the new tank and added all the water and substrate from the old tank (40 gallon). Added the turtles the same day.Do you filter your water with carbon before you add it to your tank? If not you will need to let the water sit overnight to evaporate any chlorine/chloramine. I learned not long ago that you don't need to let your tank cycle before adding your turtle.

I usually just add tap water.. No harm has come to him as of yet in doing so :D

I figured if I do it like you say, then most of the water will be already cycled and it would be o.k to add him the same day. Sure would make it a lot easier on all of us if I can do that.

Yes you can add him the same day. What size tank did you decide on?

Can they get a 75 gallon wide ? I would get a wide tank vs a tall.

Is Skimmer a confirmed male?

A 100 gallon is about a foot longer than a 75 gallon, so you will probably have an equally difficult time transporting it. My 90 gallon tank and stand barely fit into my sister's Highlander.

I wouldn't worry about cycling and all that stuff, just get the temps right.

Yes, Skimmer is definitely a male.. His nails are super long ( I will see if I can attach a photo)

I bought the tank and the stand last night at Petsmart. I got the stand home (had to put it together.. grrrr.. what a nightmare!)
and go back for the tank today. I am hoping 75 gallons will be enough for him and I shouldn't ever have to buy another one, unless I just want to instead of having to.

All set up... wish I could have gone to a 90 or 100, but that would have required some hired help and a lot more $$.

Here is what I hope is Skimmer's final tank. We have had him just over 2 yrs and already around the $3000 range of expenses.. Yikes!

Here are some pics

(Still have to put the background on, but that will be done tomorrow.. (another $25.00.. lol)

Also, I will be raising the water to the top, but have to buy some more PVC pipe that's a bit longer.
