It can also be a territorial sign.

I like the bucket idea, how do they like the basking area?

Well, my res never has basked much. But my Mississippi loves it. On it all day long sometimes.

I've seen plastic stools used as well. The turtle could swim under it, but it'd never hold up that rock nor would it be tall enough.

thats what i thought also, but ive literally Never seen it before since ive owned them. If it was territorial im sure i would have seen it because they were in a much smaller tank before this. The smaller turtle has just reached about 5 inches, the large one is about an inch larger, but as far as the claw length they arent long like most male Res.

if it was territorial would they fight at all? because they never fight unless over food

If one or both are males, then it will likely escalate and you will need to separate tanks or a separated tanks. Females usually get along, but not always. RES just have dominating personalities.

Has anyone done any work with mil plasic with turtles?
I still want to make that table/pond and i read online that a good way of waterproofing would be to just cover the pond and table in mil plastic.

It's probably OK but i have not tried it. So this will be a liner? If so, I would probably try pond liner (if we're talking RES here).

Regular old mil plastic won't work as it deteriorates rather quickly. Its actually made that way so it won't be in landfills that long.
