I'm not sure what you're building... wasn't it just a stock tank, sealed drain, tank wrapped in a waterproof liner with a wooden stand and frame?

Plumbers putty is only used to seal a drain to a sink or to seal a faucet to a sink etc. It can be toxic. If it isn't toxic it will be OK but I'm not sure how you used it? I would look for the 1" to 1 1/4" fitting on line. You can also find 1" hose on line.

I didn't seal the drain, I hooked up a hose with a valve to it so I can drain it in the tub. And I used putty to seal the bulkhead and all the connections to the drain

What am I building? Lol this turned into this huge freakibg thing.


Question about a filter. How many inches can there be from the top of the tank to the water line? Is 20 OK? Or should I make it less?

I found the connect. Lol turns out there was a nipple in the box that converts to a garden hose connector

The putty I used says it can be used for potable water and people online say this putty is OK for tanks. Even the ones with fish. Will see

Another question. The 100 gallon stock tank, 100 gallons is when it's filled to the rim or...?

Still stuck on the safety of filling it with water. With my estimation, the entire thing weighs about 2 tons

I've hears that when the connections are plastic to plastic, then you use some plumber's tape. A wall with a window should be load bearing. Filled to the top should be 100 gallons. 1 gallon of water weighs 8.3 pounds, so you should be OK.

Thank you very much. One last problem. There should be no more (per fluval instructions) than 7 inches from the top of the tank to water level. I have about 15. What can happen?

My entire setup (with wood and all) is about 2 tons. So I'm a little worried

2 tons is over 4,000 pounds, so that I would be worried about. A filled stock tank would probably be around 900 pounds (also no one usually fills it all the way to the top).

I'm no sure I understand the instructions. Could that be illustrated?

Here's the page from fluval. The water level should never be 7 inches below your rim. Mine is about 15 inches from the rim.

It's already hooked up, just wondering what the possible problems are

OK, it should still work but will probably add a little strain to the filter.

This has been a crazy project but it was interesting. Learned about building codes and joists and stuff in the process.

What I learned is that you really don't know for sure whether you're OK or not. You can calculate until you turn blue but let's say there's water damage under your floor (and our radiators leak constantly) and them nothing else matters. It's all luck. I'm hoping I get lucky.
