I took some pictures after I scrubbed his shell and let it dry completely.

Also, on the other turtle, what is this?

I'm probably being stupid and paranoid, but I don't remember seeing anything like this on my turtles I used to have. When he breathes the skin goes all the way out past his shell, and then when he inhales the skin does like the first picture.

Quite possibly. Should I cut down on his food?

Only you would know if you're giving too much but it doesn't hurt to re-evaluate regularly.

My filter gave out today. It won't start sucking up water.
My parents are out at Bass pro, so I'm hoping they'll make the ten minute drive to petsmart to get a cheap canister filter.

I would have a good canister filter if I had the money... Christmas needs to come sooner!
Apparently we're going to Petsmart right when mom gets home to get a canister filter. She won't spend more than 100 though. I don't know what to do. I may have to get a hang on aquarium filter. I know they suck but I can't afford 150+ dollars for a filter right now.

I checked everything. It just won't start suction. The water gets half way up the intake tube and stops. I have to sit and pour tank water through the tube just right until it starts to suck, then quickly stick the tube back in the water multiple times. It's a cheap canister, only rated for 40 gallons with a 55 gallon tank and three turtles. I was expecting it to give out, and i'm glad it did on a Saturday and not while I was at school, but now I've gotta drive an hour to go look at canisters.

Petco is much cheaper than petsmart when it comes to canister filters, they even have a 20% Halloween sell right now on them, but that's an hour and thirty minutes and no way I'm driving that far during rush hour. I would order one from amazon, but it wouldn't come for days and I am not comfortable leaving a fifty five gallon tank with no filter and three turtles for 2-3 days. It just screams disaster.

Day one of running a crappy Tetra Fin hangon "Whisper" filter rated for 60 gallons. Can not wait to get a canister.

Figured I would update this thread with updates on the babies and the tank.
They've been upgraded to a 75 gallon tank now that sits on my floor until I'm able to either make a stand or buy a stand.
They live with:
1 "mickey mouse" platy
4 red nose tetras
2 orange gouramis
2 blue gouramis
2 Australian rainbowfish (was 3, I need to go get more since they're schooling fish)
Nims begging for food. He's super happy about the bigger tank!

One of the blue Gourami's. I absoloutely love these guys, they're just super shy.

The overall tank before I put new driftwood in

It looks very bare to me. I want to get it planted at least half of it with live plants because that's supposed to help with the filtration aspect. I want to go with a pond/river theme.

If that driftwood starts to fall apart "like mine did" Mopani wood works great. Its a real hard wood from Africa. Your setup is looking good to me!

Thanks! I had the other piece of wood laying on the bottom since I got the 55 a while ago and it is just now barely starting to fall apart. I've looked at Mopani wood and I really want to get some! Just the price is ridiculous.
The tanks got a long way to go before I'm happy with it.
