Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

I know this is inexcusable, but for a long time I didn't know RES should eat veggies. I got my boy when I was a kid, and like any kid didn't do my research. He's now 10 and I've had him since he was a hatchling. So, now that I know better I'm trying to get him to eat right. This is day 1. He's somewhere under a mess of red leaf lettuce, dandelion green, and carrots.

He picked at the carrot, but looked at the lettuce with a big question mark hovering over his head. I just made some turtle Jell-O shots with red lettuce, dandelion greens, carrot, green bean, and squash in it. Soooo, I'm hoping that does the trick. I'm going to cut the shots into sticks like the food he's used to. I'm praying that might trigger something in itty-bitty brain.

He ate the Jello! It has red lettuce, dandelion greens, green beans, carrots, and yellow squash in it. Is this a good mix for him? The majority of it is the greens.

Yes, that's just great! You can also add some cuddle bone or calcium powder. If your turtle doesn't get any that is.

It does have calcium powder in it too. And a bit of vitamin powder. Another member of the forum said turtles should not have much carrot, and I sort of freaked out. Haha But I don't imagine there's a ton in each serving. They talked about it causing a build up of vitamin A. Thank you so much for responding. My boy is having a lot of changes as I'm upgrading everything for him, and I'm worrying myself over if I make a mistake or not. I don't want him hurt because of me.

Too much Vitamin A is toxic. I would think you would have to feed a lot before it became an issue.

I know it it, but it came across to me like it was really easy to do or something. Haha

Don't over use veggies. Start slowly and try a veggie clip. Also think about aquatic plants... if those are not eaten, they can serve as decorations (albeit shredded up).

And when Jade does start to eat it, keep an eye on the poop. If it's too loose then you might need to cut back.

Okay! Thank you. I'm changing him over to greens only jello mix, so hopefully that won't mess him up.

What is your feeding schedule? Mon-Sun. Steve is correct, if the poop gets loose your overdoing the veggies. You will know it will be a mess. I'm not saying its right but there are keepers that feed pellets only. I like to switch it up mixing pellets, wheat germ, frozen krill, snails etc. Jello shots are fine if you can't get your turtle to eat greens but if your turtle will eat fresh greens why bother making the jello.

Agreed! Sadly, Jade looks at greens the same way my dad does... Or a toddler does for that matter. So, jello is the only real option at the moment. As for now he's on pellets only until I get the jello mix right. Then it will be over to jello 5 days a week with the other two days pellets and a little bit of cricket. If he gets the runs I'll throw in a few off days too to allow his system to catch up before I throw more foot at him, so to speak. Right now I'm waiting to hear of the calcium Exo Terra is okay. I put that in the jello and it's low phosphorus, but not zero. Do you know of any zero brands?

That's a lot of jello! I use Repti Calcium by Zoo Med its phosphorus free. I just dust the pellets with it.

I just bought that calcium today and used it in the batch I made tonight. I'm using a gelatin with less protein, and made half the batch with just calcium, and the other half with calcium and vitamins (only 1/2 tsp of vitamins in the whole half batch) and I'm going to give him one with vitamins once a week. The jello now only has red lettuce, turnip greens, and dandelion greens. I might have already said that, but I don't remember. I also took out 1/4 cup of water because I'm only using one packet of gelatin.

It sounds like you don't want to feed your turtle pellets. Might I as why that is? Res will eat lettuce, carrots etc as they get older its not something that needs to be forced.
