Ok, I installed my new mega ray 100w bulb this morning and have a question. Is this bulb supposed to produce a bright white light like a 75 or 100 w incandescent? It looks to have a green spot in the center of the beam and its not very bright compared to the 75w bulb I was useing for heat. Its also not as hot as I thought it would be. I think I'm going to have to hang it 12" from the basking rock to get 90 degree range. Any input guys? Thanks.

I've only ever had the 160w model. I think mine is at 18 or 19". Any closer and it's too hot.

It is not as bright as an incandescent of the same wattage, but I do not have any green or off color center. The color was more white than the powersun I went from, but definitely less white and less bright than the same size incandescent, which makes sense, because some of the power is going into uvb production that we can't see.

I'd definitely write them about the green center, though.

EDIT: how long had it been on when you checked the temp?

Not 1 of my turtles bask all day. Usually they all bask at different times. I just checked the temp again. At 14" the temp is 81.5 and my girlfriend asked why its green. I'm writing them. Its in a deep dome fixture.

Just tried to write to them on their web site and ran into another problem. They require a code at the end before the submit button but the numbers have spaces and when I try to enter all of them it won't let me enter the last number or letter and keeps telling me I entered the wrong code! Not phone friendly! Grrrrr

Is the bulb a flood version? Want me to send them the email? I just need the message part. They also have a facebook page if you want to reach them that way https://www.facebook.com/ReptileUV

Steve, as far as I can tell the self ballested bulbs are all flood. They have 5 to choose from maybe I should have bought a higher wattage? I figured for heat I was useing a 75 watt bulb so the 100 would be hotter but its not and its green in color. This is the bulb I also have a picture of the light its emitting if you would like to see it. Image

100W should be the most common choice. I don't use MVBs currently, but the one I did use (T-Rex.. way back) did have a bit of green to it. They also have a #... "252.240.9088 between the hours of 9am and 4pm, Monday through Friday, eastern standard time", so you will probably get a faster response that way.

Edit: odd, below that info, they give his personal #, which is the same as above and they say to call anytime.

Also came across this little note from Frances (but 5 years ago):

"The extra visible light and its golden quality is also beneficial to counteract the grey-green light that's typical of all mercury vapour lamps."

They don't actually have a customer service #. That's Bob's personal #. I was just wanting to know if it was supposed to have that green color? I gather it is. I think next time I will get the 150w. Thanks for the info guys. I will give it some time and see if the turtles adjust to the new light.

I'd still ask, it would be good to get to the bottom of this.

Mississippi basked for about an hour this morning. Slidy basked for about the same time. Not normal basking behavior. Usually they both love to bask all day and the diamondbacks join in from time to time. I will try to find out what's up.
