I decided that I want to use sand for the bottom of the tank, so I picked up a 50 pound bag today at Lowe's. Got home and started washing it, and it's actually a lot more "orangey" colored than I expected. I was hoping for a lot lighter tan - is that play sand? This is quickrete, which I remembered seeing that someone had used.

I'm not beyond calling the small amount of $$ and the 1.5 hours I spent washing it all a waste if play sand (or something else) is colored closer to what I was thinking. In the bag it looks more tan than it does when it's wet.

If it's silica-based sand, then you can use it. I think pool filter sand works better -- lighter color, bigger grain, and less initial cleaning.
