i have no idea where to start. my mississippi map turtle (around 3 years old) started to have odd behavior.
it started with basking... all. freaking. day. never would get off. not once. not to eat, not to do anything really.
i thought it was the water, so i did a 50% water change. that did the trick for around 2 days.
after 2 days, something else started. my turtle would sleep all day at the bottom of the tank. it slept for around 4 weeks, waking up for not even 10 minutes at a time to get air.
then its shell started deteriorating, because it wasnt basking.
i made an appointment for last thursday but it was rescheduled to monday since the specialist couldnt make it.
what will they even do when im there? there is so many things wrong with this turtle. its shell, its eyes (wont open one anymore), its diet (wont eat ANYTHING)
its so sad because i loved this turtle :( ive had her since she was the size of a dollar (i live in canada)
i just dont know what went wrong
info on tank:
50 gallon tank
fluval 406 canister filter
fluval E100 heater
bare bottom tank
25% water changes weekly.

Even if the turtle doesn't bask, the shell shouldn't just "deteriorate". If there is deterioration beyond normal shedding, then it's likely some sort of infection and those can be extremely serious. A physical inspection by the right vet could provide a lot of inside, but some blood tests and possible cultures need to be taken to determine what is wrong and what is treatable. Good luck with the visit!

hey i have an update so the vet saw the shell and said that my turtle needs help with shedding so everyday for the rest of its life i need to take a soft toothbrush and brush for 5 minutes.
about the eyes:
one eye is okay, the other eye wasnt opening so he numbed the eye with local anasthetic and then he tried to rub my turtles eye and very slowly it opened. he saw it was inflamed and POSSIBLY infected. he took another substance which i forgot the name but he flushed out the eye with it.
he then prescribed 2 medicines, one anti inflam and one anti biotic as a preventative (incase it was infected)
he said she was also dehydrated, but she should start to go back into the water as her pain is eased.
im so relieved

ALSO i forgot he also asked general info about my turtle and one of those questions were what im feeding it i said veggies/feeder fish/ reptomin and he didnt say anything just kept typing and towards the end on my way out he showed me a paper and said that these 2 foods are the only good foods, the others are all garbage (he literally said it like that).
the 2 good foods were mazuri and and another again i forgot it.
he also gave me a link to the vet webise and said they have a formulated recipe that is great for a daily diet, so i will start using that.

here is the recipe! im going to have to start a man hunt for some of these ingredients

oops forgot the steps

Great to hear the update! Hope she makes a speedy recovery! Also interesting to see a different take on the "jell-o shot recipe".
