Hello! It’s been a while since I posted here. Thought I’d give an update on my progress. I actually got a great deal on a 75 gal tank and stand from petsmart :) (from a 50gal breeder) I’ve been using my cascade 1000 with your recommended media setup and LOVE it! He’s still small so I’ll be able to get away with not upgrading to the larger filter for a while. I have black sand and artificial decor since he liked to shred wood and cork haha. I made my basking area from the eggcrate and reptile carpet, and attached one of those pet store floating docks for a ramp. I’d like to have one more smaller light on the inside to brighten it up but I’ll wait until I find a good sale. It’s a marineland hidden LED and I am super pleased with the color. It’s not yellow at all.

Benny seems to love it and I can walk up to the tank while he’s basking now without him diving back in the water. I ordered him a lettuce clip to try some stuff because the only veggie stuff I can get him to eat so far is water lettuce from the pet store. I’ve cut back a lot on his pellets though and skip a day sometimes. I’ll start offering veggies first. He’s getting close to a year old. Hmmm, that might be it :) happy turtling!!!!

P.s. I’m not sure why one is sideways but it’s not if you click on it

The upgrade looks great! I really like the dark look. What lamp are you using for his basking area?

It’s a Mega Ray. I’m a little concerned of the heat this summer though as we don’t have central air. I’ll have to watch it and possibly raise my hook higher to accommodate

Do you have a temp gun? It'll give you fast and accurate readings.

Yes I have a temp gun. And one of those little reptile temp disks attached to his basking wall. And thanks! I really like how the black sand makes everything including the turtle “pop”

How often do you clean it? I bet it does a better job hiding turtle waste in there.

I do like 25% water changes 1-2 weeks and attempt to siphon by just swirling it around above the sand if that makes sense. So it lifts up the crud and not the sand. I really never see waste though. I dunno if that will change when he’s bigger and makes bigger poops? Lol or if my filter just does a damn good job. (Which I know it does regardless) then I do like 50% water change every 1-1.5 months, clean my decor with a toothbrush, turn the sand over after siphoning, and clean my filter and change the carbon. This is the first month I have all the fake plants and rocks in the bottom so we will see if the clutter hinders the filtration at all. My water has always been super clean, I love the new setup.

Sounds like it's working pretty well for you. You're doing a much better job than me on maintenance :)

Awesome thanks! The thing is everything I do now is still 100% less work than what I was told to do when I got the turtle. (50% changes weekly and Tear it all down monthly and clean everything with vinegar or bleach) I’m so glad I found this site!! I was way misinformed about loads of stuff.

Glad to hear it! I always tell people going bigger with tank and filter will require less cleaning. Keeping things basic and simple go a long way in making this easier.
