There is a streak of orangy brown sludge in the tank.

What is it? Is it algae of some sort?[/i]

Is it under the UVB/UVA? If it is, it is most likely non-harmful algae(just an eye sore) that can be wiped off. If it is not it could be algae from bacteria which can be harmful and should be wiped off as soon as it starts to build up.

I scrubbed it off with a tooth brush and did a 50% water change. It is directly under the UVB, so I thik it is probably algae, but I have never seen any in my tank before.

Did you do a water change recently? I get a "sludge" build up if I do a water change but do not clean the filters...
