Yes, that's one way. Another is if you cut the lid in half, then put a hinge on each side piece, that way, there's no need for any wood across the middle of the lid. So, that should answer your question, chrissy.

Thanks for all the complements, everyone! One thing to remember if you go with any open-aired tank lid: if it gets cold where you live, you'll need to keep the drafts out of the tank. I use a sheet of thick plexi glass that I lay on top of the lid I made, leaving the basking area uncovered so as not to filter out the UV rays from the lights. There's others on here that have posted about using Lexan polycarbonate, also available at the hardware store. If you have tubes, filters, etc. you need to cut the plastic to fit around, the hardware store should be able to do that if you have the measurements or a template made of cardboard. Hope this helps!
