Photo Contest

Hi all, I'm trying to gauge interest in a monthly photo contest. I've written some rules that I think would be acceptable for now. How do these rules sound?

Monthly photo contest
The contest is open to everyone, including non-registered users. Winning photo(s) may appear on the RedEarSlider.com homepage and appear in a Sticky in the Photo gallery forum. Additional photos might be added to the Photo gallery of the website. I am currently investigating a few upgrades to that forum, so rules and requirements may change.

Current rules
Judging will be limited to moderators and randomly selected users. Judges may submit photos, but they cannot vote for their photos. Random judges may not be publicly announced. There is no lobbying of any kind permitted. Photos, photographers and judges will be disqualified if this occurs. The same person(s) is not permitted to win consecutively. Specifically, the previous month's winner is allowed to submit entries for the next contest but cannot be selected as the next winner. However, the previous winner will be allowed to judge the following month.

Materials
Photographs can be of any type of turtle or tortoise. Photos of unique enclosures or environments are welcome. Hand-drawn or painted artwork may be considered. Submitted photos must not be copyrighted, and you must have permission to use that photo. The photo must not be commercially available (stock photography) or taken from a personal or professional website (or other sources). A limit of 3 photos per person may be submitted for judging. Photos should be clear and may be digitally enhanced. A size of 640x480 pixels is recommended. We may request larger pictures at a later time. Do not include text with photos. Time stamps may be acceptable as long as it does not diminish the quality of the photo. It is advisable to limit people or other distractions in the photos.

General Acknowledgement
By submitting photos, we reserve the right to use such photos throughout this site and on advertising related to this site, including but not limited to merchandising. Submitted photos may be subject to modification, editing or enhancement. We will attempt to notify respective photographers in the manner in which we will use the photos; however, it is not a guarantee that we will do so.

I think this is a wonderful idea, and you have thought of good rules, especially the 3 photo limit.

I think the idea sounds great. I am concerned about not having people in the photographs though. I can understand that you don't want people submitting photographs of people who do not wish to online. I, for instance, have a great picture of some goldfish nibbling at my boyfriends fingers in a pond. The picture isn't of my boyfriend, but he is specifically placed in the photo. Does that make sense? It appears that you are taking everyones word that the photos would be used with permission, so couldn't the same be done for using a photo with someone else in?

Good idea, bad timing. My digital camera broke and my new one won't be here for 5 weeks.

Oh well, I get to it next month.

Great idea and I would love to participate!
I would also like to submit some pics for the general photo gallery ... but don't know where or how to send them.
I've seen this info somewhere in the forum and would appreciate a little direction if anyone can help me.
My computer crashed a few weeks ago and after getting everything back together, I think all I need is an email address to send them via "instant share"
through HP. Thx ... fric

missibsu - if the person is not distracting in the photo, it should be OK. I think there will be a preference on the quality of the photo and the subject so it is up to you on how you want to have your photos.

Fric, you're more than welcome to send us photos (or post them). We will likely post several photos from each contest.

I guess everyone can start sending photos (not questions) to photos@redearslider.com

Please make sure you include your username.

Sept 25 is the last day to submit and we will do a quick and sloppy judging period. Winner(s) announced on the 30th.

These rules will be re-posted on the website. Thanks again all and good luck!

Steve- I am a bit concerned . . . .all of my work is copyrighted, but I am the true owner. I just want to make sure if I consent, will that be okay?

if you are the owner of that copyright and the photographer then it should be OK. the copyright part is to prevent others from taking someone else's work.
