Aw! Super cute!

What kind of rock is that? If it's rough you might want to look for something smoother or cover it with fabric or something, some turtles experience bruising from climbing over abrasive surfaces.

Could you post pics of your whole basking area? I'm curious to see it, it looks really cool and original!

Which rock are you talking about? What the turtle is basking on? That is wood. Or what I used for grip, because they are super smooth hand picked pebbles.

This is the only other pic I have atm. I just cut a hole in a cheap plastic tank, a stick in a ramp. It's not really original since I got most of my ideas from searching this forum.

i really like your idea of putting the plastic tank around the basking area. how did you connect it and get it to stay?

Your tank, basking area and turtle look great. You did a good job looking at all the great ideas here and coming up with something that looks great.

Looks fabulous! I'm sure the wood is fine for the basking spot, I just misinterpreted the picture and thought it was rough rock!

Hard to explain

I think you can see two of plastic clamp things. There are two more on the opposite side. On top of that I put two strong bits of acrylic across the width of the tank and then sat basking tank on top. I stop it from sliding with loads of suckers which come with everything. The rest of the tank is covered with acrylic to stop the dude from escape.

I can try to explain with pictures when I take more.

I love RES but I chose the southern painted because they don't get nearly as big. My number 1 choice would have been a midland painted but I couldn't find any.

I'm more than happy with this guy because since day one it has never been scared of me. It was very finicky at the start though, wouldn't touch any pellets for 10 days, and even then it only spat them out. Loves them now.

Update more than five years later...

I got an off camera flash, so I thought I would test it out on my turtle.

5 years later and this turtle must be one of the slowest growing turtles ever. I know southern painted turtles grow slowly and don't get that big, but it's just over 3 inches which is crazy... Still though eats like crazy, I've had no issues and I guess it enjoys the extra swimming room.
