He doesn't know how good he has it at home!

(Jet could be a girl .... I've yet to sort that out)

They (Jet and Spike) had a wander today around the room as I was cleaning their home.

Damn the little buggers can move fast....

I would just be careful about nails/claws getting stuck in the screen and breaking off.

JessicaTS - this was a concern of mine, hence the gladness of finding the site. I have cut back on pellets and doubled their veggie intake. Also I have changed some of the types of veggies I was giving them.

Steve That was my concern too - which is why s/he was put back on solid ground in a closed off area after the escape attempt. They really are devious when it comes to that aren't they?

Oops late to reply! Stupid me was giving both the kids spinach quite a lot which they seemed to love - obviously I've stopped that now and am sticking to the recommended veggies listed on this site.

I have two turtles - who I saved from a stall at a festival - you had to catch them in ice cream cones (sounds cruel - luckily the cones are very soft - however I dread to think what happened to the ones who weren't caught) - and having never had turtles before thought I was doing the right thing - as per the advice I was given, from the pet store I initially enquired about their care at.

Both Jet and Spike have been through a lot of changes since finding this forum - new diet, new basking coaching techniques - and very soon a new home.

Turtles are very common pets here - especially because in most apartments you are not allowed to keep pets like cats or dogs.

The worry is - is the right information being given out about their care? I thought myself a responsible carer, until I realized I had been misled by people who should know better.

My RES Tilly came from the same place as yours--one of those matsuri (this one was in Tokyo). Baby RES are very (too) common in Japan, especially in the summer. I'd love to be able to stop them from being imported like they are (as well as being exported from the U.S.). :(

The good news is though that this year I only saw one stall - and they were giving the turtles away in proper carry tanks this time instead of plastic bags.

I never saw a big festival that didn't have them. And if those carry tanks are the ones I'm thinking of, many people will make them the turtle's home...

Not surprised, I read that 7 1/2 million hatchlings are exported from the US annually. Wonder how many are sold domestically.
