Do bettas need heaters?..

i seen some setups with heaters..

if i remember correctly one of bulldogs bettas

mango his name was had a heater..?;x

I know they are sold in little cups at the petstores..

EDIT: I remember this one investigation PETA did at a petsmart

and on video they found out that betta fish are shiped in 3inch small plastic bags with BARELY enough water to survive its really sick to watch

they showed how the animals are treated behind doors and what not at petsmart

no they dont well i dont think so they dont at the store it wouldnt hurt i guess

Bettas are tropical water fishes so they perfer water from 75-88 degrees so you can actually put them in with your turtle if you felt like it but most owners don't since they 1) will get their tails ripped off 2) Get aggressive or 3) End up starving if they manage to dodge the turtles but the turtle steals their food.

^n00b hit it on the head, they prefer warmer water, and will be more active with the warm water, but they can survive with water a bit cooler.
All my bigger betta tanks have a heater, and I keep them at about 80*F. My small tank has a heater too, and it's at about 78*F.

Though I'd never put a betta with a turtle. I think that slow moving, long flowing tail would be too much for even the most docile turtle to resist, and soon there'd be nothing left of the betta

Sir Max - I know responsible fish brokers ship their fish in bags with 1/3 water and 2/3 air. I know it looks horrible, but the fish needs the oxygen. I know it's shocking to see bettas when they first get shipped in, with basically just enough water to cover their bodies, but keep in mind that this should only be temporary, most fish are shipped with overnight delivery and are in the bags 24 hours or less (hopefully!).

Hehe, that's what I love about bettas. You can get them a pretty nice setup for $20-25, whereas a setup for a turtle is $300-500

How big are the baby guppies? If they're bigger than the betta's mouth, there's a good chance they won't get eaten, but I think it depends on the betta. Apparently most bettas love to snack on shrimp, but mine have never gone after the ghost shrimp!
The other thing - If you've got adult male guppies on there, the betta might fight with them. To bettas, guppies look too much like another betta, so they see a rival.
