Nice looking turtle. How long are those nails, and what's the underside of the tail (cloaca) look like? The gravel could be problematic if it's big enough for him to eat (always the chance of impaction). At the very least, it traps debris and makes cleaning harder. Consider trying some smooth river rocks larger than the head.

Thanks, the nails are are about 1/2 inch (longest one). Is that a problem? Not sure what you mean about the tail. I'm working on the Gravel since reading the boards but I always use the gravel. I use alge eaters and snails to clean the gravel. But like i said, i'm working on it. Seems like all you guys know alot more then me.

Thanks again!!

Very nice looking turtle! :)

I commented on the gravel on your other post. ;) There was a post not long ago where the turtle died from eating gravel over a period of time. It was a very sad thing that could have been prevented if known by the owner. Turtles are opportunistic eaters - eating anything smaller than them that's put into the tank. This is why it is suggested not to use the gravel.

You should be able to tell the gender of your turtle since it's over 4 inches, thus the questions about the nails and tail. The nails look quite long from the view on one of the pics. Male RES will have very long nails and a longer thicker tail than a female RES with the cloacal opening lower on the tail. :)

Hi and welcome... Go PSU :) I'm in Pennsylvania and have a son who graduated from PSU. Nice looking turtle, great lookin shell with an interesting pattern. I agree with the others regarding the gravel, just not worth the risk of the turtle eating it even if it is Blue and White :D
