OT: Re sizing pictures for Avatars?

Just wondering if anyone else has a method to re sizing photos to fit the 6kb parameters set up here? It's impossible to get a picture I've taken to resize to 6kb (and remain recognizable), using paint. Is there another program I could use, that works for this?

you can try uploading it to photobucket.com and editting it in that. i use adobe photoshop, but that's not worth it unless you really want photoshop

Imgur.com is pretty cool for hosting pics and resizing them. If you link off-site, the restrictions don't apply (I think).
