while we were building the new dock, a friendly turt found some interest in it aswell. Any1 know what type it is. This was found in the Muskoka area in Ontario, Canada. I'm pretty sure its a snapper.

I think they all have short blunt claws like that, Fric- they walk along the bottom more than they swim. There is a huge colony of them in Buffalo Bayou near Memorial park; I used to work in a building with a deck looking out over the bayou, and they would all swim to it and beg for food.

Looking at that turtle, I bet she was a rescue who was mended and released. He looks like he's had major shell trauma in the past, but it has healed, and he's not very afraid of humans.

It looks like she's checking to see if any invertebrates have been stirred up.

I'm a couple hours East of the Muskoka and North of Ottawa myself. We get to see ALOT of snappers around here. Usually they are quite laid back aswell as large!!! We've actually had them swim right up to our boat (while fishing) and our dock. Surprizingly he (or she) wasn't intimidated by us! I just wish I got pics! Thanks for the great shots!

OH! And as a disclaimer for all cottagers! Do NOT ever attempt to pick up of of these seemingly tame species! They are called snappers for a reason! When they're posed in a defense position watch out!
