Where did you get all of that nice equipment for free? I am looking into setting up a much larger area for my little guy, but I don't have a job right now and have very little money I can spend at the time being. Thanks, any help would be appreciated!

Are you saying that this tank that we're looking at is outside? Because sunlight can heat up the water in a glass tank like this and cook your turtles.

I'm also curious about what you meant by getting outside UV light. I see two problems with that.

1. If the tank is physically outside in the sun it will heat up and cook the turtle like fishandcandy said.

2. From the first and second photos it looks like you have the top of the basking area covered with glass or plexiglass? You should not have anything in between the heat lamp and/or UV light and the basking area. In the case of UV light it will get filtered by the glass/plexiglass. And im not sure how your heat lamp will be effective with something in between it and the turtle.

theres nothing in between the basking light and my diy basking area, and the temperature of the water gets higher than 80 degrees even in the middle of the day in summer....

I'm not understanding the "outside" thing either; in the picture, it looks as if the tank is inside. Can you clarify? If you have the tank outside, that is the reason your water is heating up so much in the summer. 80+ degree water is only recommended if the turtle is sick.

I love that skull! You should run an airline to it for bubbles.

do i have to show u guys a pic of the thermometer at 2 pm and convince u all that 55 gallons of water CAN NOT be heated in a 85 max air temp day...so u guys should knock off u negative stuff and gimme some positive comments...

I don't think people are trash talking. I believe that everyone on this site genuinely cares about your turtle and those belonging to others. I've been on this site for over a year and if I posted a picture and someone gave me feedback, I'd be happy to take the advice. If the advice doesn't work for you, read it and move on.

As for the water temp. You can try filling some old pop bottles with water and freezing them. Then let them float on top of the water. You can use regular ice as well, but if it needs water conditioner, don't forget to do that first. The pop bottles are reusable, that's why I suggested them first.

It is a general understanding that posting pictures of your set up means you want to hear comments from experienced and knowledgable folks here. Those comments will including positive feedback such as suggestions, questions, advice and experience - all given free with the understanding that you may or may not agree. Nothing here was meant as "negative". As Missi said, if you don't agree with something, just move on to the next post.

Just to let you know why your water may be heating up, the warmer water is, the less oxygen it has. You can always add a bubble wand to give the water more aeration. That might help decrease the temperature.
