He passed away sometime during the night. I found him this morning at the bottom of his tank upside down. He was only 1 inch, 6 grams.

I am so sorry you lost your turtle, he was such a pretty color green and so cute. I am not sure how yours died, but I used to have two baby turtles myself, but then one became sick with a Respiratory Infection. I had no idea what was going on, I didn't know how to take care of them, I had just rescued them from my roommate at college who was a bad owner! She left them by the cold window alot and would forget to feed them or clean their tank.
At the time he was sick, I was so scared. I thought if I could just get it to eat something he would be okay. But he too died, I found him in the water upside down and bloated, and my other turtle Cortez was in the corner of the tank lying very still. After I took him out, Cortez, the remaining turtle, was scared of me for a couple months. I was so hurt because I felt like I failed my turtle.
But after that experience I promised to become more knowledgable about the RES and how to take care of them. I grew over attached to my Cortez and spoil her every chance I get, and she warmed back up to me. She isn't afraid of me anymore, but now that she is older, she hates to be picked up! LOL.
I guess I am sharing this with you to encourage you to get more turtles if you truly love them. And use this as a learning experience. But I myself will never forget the one I lost.

Sorry for your loss, Michelle. Unfortunately, many baby turtles are sick before you get them and since they hide their illnesses so well, you don't really know anything is wrong until they are very very sick.

Gosh dangit! I was like cute little turtle, oh he's sick, but he'll get better! And the crushed. There's something about turtles that put off this helpless type look to them, and I think that's what draws all of us near to them.
If you're up to it, give yourself some grieving time and adopt again! Love, shelter, nuritment are all yours to give and it would be ashame to waste it.
I'm still pissed off about your turtle dying.

JELslider, your story is very much like my first experience with turtles. After my first two died from RI, I also vowed to learn everything I could.
It was a long road back then because there were no vets that took turtles. You just had to *prevent* the illnesses & hope for the best. Warm, clean water, a plant light, & good food.....Tetra Reptomin foodsticks honestly gave all my turtles the best chance at life many yrs ago. None of them ever were malnourished, thanks to that vitamin-filled food! But it took me losing my first 2 turts to really start to understand that these are very fragile pets. And like people have said on the board, many times the kids are mistreated before the pet owners get them. I am certain that the one turtle I had was mistreated before I got him. He was weak, malnourished, and gave my other turtle RI, killing them both.
Michelle, I am still very sorry to hear about your little baby. Your set up was fantastic. I hope that someday you choose to try again with another turt. If you want to shop for another little one, let me know & I will be happy to go with you.
