here is a video of my pair of convict chiclids their names are romeo and juliet  they have just had their first set of fry and i wanted to share a video because most of the time the mother(the smaller brighter color fish) herds them into that barrel decoration when i am around. now in the video u first see the male come at the glass to scare me off and then u might see the mother keep going back to that tan colored rock, what she is doing is scooping up her babies in her mouth and depositing them back with the group huddled near the back of the decoration, there seems to be several hundred fry but the only time u can see them is at the end of the vid because they are only a few days old so they are very small. please tell me any questions or share ANY comments you have! :D

That's awesome. Cichlids are some of the best parents in the fish world. I used to have a pair of Port Cichlids and they had babies regularly. I used to raise them until they were like almost an inch long and then I'd sell them to the pet store. There are some cichlids where the males keep the eggs in their mouth and then keep the babies in there after they hatch, until they get big enough to venture out on their own. The male won't eat anything during that whole time! It's really neat, because as the babies grow, the male will open his mouth to let them swim out and investigate their surroundings, but at the first sign of danger, the male signals a warning with a twitch of his fins and the babies all rush back into his mouth again for protection. It's really cool to watch.

Thats crazy. I have a chiclid now, an oscar. Im not sure about the gender, since it's kinda hard to tell with fish. it is about 4 months old now, ive had it since it was an inch long. its over 4 inches now! those things get frkin big, maximum of 18 inches i believe (bigger than an RES! although only in rare ocassions, in captivity its most likely 14) the only partenr it has is a pleco thats also grwon quite a bit. cool babies, i dont think ill ever have any though, although i should try. DavidY made money off em, i wanna make money to

Um, you definitely won't get babies with one oscar and one pleco. lol! ;) The Port Cichlids I had are very easy to raise and breed. If you put a male and a female together, you will have babies, on a regular basis. You can't prevent it. Other cichlids may be more difficult than others. I've had a pair of oscars before but never got babies from them.

WOAH!! Thaat was realy cool. I never knew fish could be actual PARENTS!!! Usually, they try to eat the fry, but I guess it's not so with these chiclids!
