they can only be bred in captivity when proper conditions are provided. Eggs laid in water are not viable.

They can only have babies if the eggs are fertile/they have mated. A female will lay eggs whether or not she has mated.
Regardless, of whether or not the eggs have been fertilized, a female should have a proper nesting area to lay them in. If a female doesn't have a nesting area and only the tank to lay them in, she may try to retain them and become egg bound. If they rupture inside her, she'll need to be treated by a herp vet.

I want mine to be a female... and I want it to be ready to lay eggs... well, I really just want an excuse to build a nesting area

Really? I said a silent prayer of thanks when I found out mine was a male...Although I wouldn't have traded him in for anything even if he had been a female.

I have this fetish about building things I'm completely underqualified to build. When my gf and I are shopping, I always say I can build the things she want to buy... THen she says "I know, but I don't want you to build it, I want a good one." lol

You know--Do It Yourself filter. I want to make at least one for the stock tank and pools I have outside. They're not supposed to be hard to make according to people who've made them and posted about them on the web, but I'm still futzing around about making one...

When I replaced the case on Fluval 304, I was pretty surprised how small the motor was. No doubt a custom filter should be doable and I think Bradhart should get right to it.
