We just got a 3.5 inch RES and added to our 6 inch RED who I thought was a Female...apparently not! Cooter has been humping Beefcake every since she got in there. It is funny, he is diong the mating calls and everything. I guess he was lonely!! If eggs do hatch is there a way to save them? We have a seperate tank ready.

Just wondering if this is typical for new turtles to do to each other of if Cooter is just one horny guy!

Congrats on the new turtle. I guess you don't plan on quarintining the new turtle to make sure its healthy so your other one doesn't get sick. It may be the "mating dance" or it may be a territorial dispute. Just keep an eye on them.

The new turtle is 3.5 inches (shell length)? A bit too soon to be laying eggs (not sexually mature)--are you sure the turtle is a female?

What size tank do you have them in?

I'd say the new one is 4 inches now. They are in a 90 gallon tank and VERY happy. It was an upgrade from a 20 gallon Long.

In and out of water, the male will usually shake his claws in front of the female, then try to mount her. He will harass her, follow her everywhere.
I've heard boxies or torts that the male will actually go under the female and flip her to her back.. lol

For sexually mature turtles, the paw fluttering signals the start of the mating dance. However, if the turtles in question are not sexually mature, it can be a display of dominance. It can start early, and males and females can do it to each other.

good luck on your turtles i thought about getting ishaka a mate but i thought different about it after i seen her snap at her own reflection.

a funny though male turles aren't as different as human males when men are horny they follow us aroud LOL no offense to the guys

i have 2 res, i have owned for about 8-9 months theyre about 4 inches now, and every once in a while, the bigger one will shake its claws in front of the other ones face, and kind of stick its head up to the other ones, and just harass it for a while.. kinda feel bad for him as he sits here starring at me while basking..
lol

OK, this is going to sound crazy, but my female, who is less than 2 years old, was fluttering her "paws" at the water jet that comes out of the underwater fluval filter. At first I thought she was sick, or crazy. That was a few days ago. I haven't seen her do it again. Any ideas why that behavior? She can't be mature. She's 5 inches long, and not even 2 years old. Oh, and she is the only turt.

They will flutter at anything. My RES does it to certain rocks in his tank (and only those rocks). Why? Don't know. My guess is that something about the object in question is either attractive to them or they see it as some kind of intruder.

Ok then I must have goofy turts..
Sheldon (who everyone thinks is a female but I was told Male when I got him) went up to Bob (who we all think is a female) and started sniffing Bob's tail. Hmmmm..seen this in dog world, cat world...is it normal in turtle world?
After a few mins of sniffing IT'S tail, Sheldon then proceeded to climb on Bob's back which then got him a hefty throw across the tank.
Now mind you, Bob is 6 1/2" and 14 yrs old...think IT'S more than ready to mate.
Sheldon is 6" and 2 yrs old...is he/she of age now?
Are they even trying to mate? Or just playing a game?
