I don't use a guard for mine.
I've never seen the Turts have any problems with it. In fact the little one likes to sleep under it.
Maybe we'll both get some good advise here.

I don't use a guard for mine either. I've worried a little bit about Koopa because sometimes he gets right up next to it. I've kept an eye on him and he never seems to be effected. Finally I got brave enough and touched the heater while it was on under water and it didn't burn me so I feel better now about Koopa being near it.

I've never used on either. The way I position the heater keeps them from being able to rest on it tho.

I don't have a guard on mine either. I've never seen him try and do anything to it either.

I do use guards, but it's more to protect the heater from accidently hitting a rock or, since I use a stock tank, somehow melting the tank. I like to have the protection around it when it's taken out of the tank as well (I am sometimes not the gentlest with them when I'm in a hurry).

I use a guard. I have huge river rocks in the tank and my turts like to dig piles.
