A New Houseguest
I came home yesterday to find a dishpan on the porch with a piece of lettuce in it and what appeared to be a blackish pebble. The "pebble" began to move--it was a newly-hatched Eastern Painted, complete with egg tooth, traces of an egg sac and covered with a layer of dirt from crawling out of the nest. The person who found it on a slate walkway thought it was a rock and was going to kick it out of the way when fortunately it began to move.
So now there's a new guest in the house, impossibly tiny and impossibly cute.
I'm keeping my eyes out for others just in case.
