A New Houseguest

I came home yesterday to find a dishpan on the porch with a piece of lettuce in it and what appeared to be a blackish pebble. The "pebble" began to move--it was a newly-hatched Eastern Painted, complete with egg tooth, traces of an egg sac and covered with a layer of dirt from crawling out of the nest. The person who found it on a slate walkway thought it was a rock and was going to kick it out of the way when fortunately it began to move.

So now there's a new guest in the house, impossibly tiny and impossibly cute. :D I'm keeping my eyes out for others just in case.

Sounds like he found a good home. So neighbors just leave stray turts on your doorstep? :)

How awesome! I bet he is so cute...

Share pics if you can... wait... no that might not be a good idea. Then I'll start wanting another baby... :D

I could be getting a reptutation. Staff in one petstore refer to me as the turtle lady. :D

Unfortunately, I don't have a camera to take pictures (but this wee thing is just so sweet--absolutely dwarfs Bug (my preemie of last year)...and now even more money is needed for the turts. (The first thing I though of when I saw the baby was, "Uh-oh, there goes another $25 or so for another UVB light..." )

Knew there had to be a reason why I bought that 10-gallon tank last week...Just had a feeling that it would be needed...

Wish I could, tini, but I have no camera. :( Steve's pic isn't really a baby. Think of one that's almost the size of a nickel and without the pretty colors. I've noticed that painted hatchlings, unlike baby RES, are not that pretty when they're newly hatched--the shell is rough and a dirty color, and places where red will be are more of a pale pinkish color. Then, as they grow, they "bloom." :)

I like RES, but I'm finding there's something about painteds...

I remember one post where you mentioned you had painteds? How many do you have and how many RES? I have 2 res and 2 midland's.

Marisa, how old does he look to you? The little fella looks about 6 months to me, at least my RES were about size at that time. Either way, I think Carol should get one anyway. :D

As for me, I'll get my hands on a painted sooner or later!

Oh gee thanks steve.. How many turtles do you have again?? Maybe you need a few more, after all you make wonderful homemade tanks .. or better yet, I'll get more if you buy all they need for the new setup :D
