I use a kiddie pool with slate and a brick to form the basking dock. 1/3 of the pool is always shaded

The thing is, I don't have a kiddie pool =/.

You can use a large rubbermaid container (hence, large) which is inexpensive. A thermometer to measure the water also

Hmm, I think i've got an idea. I have a spare 3.5 gallon rubbermaid, it's pretty wide, but will it do? All I need is the idea for shade and the basking spot...

You mean just for basking? Since the sun gives off heat, you may want to let him swim also.
A 3.5 gallon will heat up very very fast, it is too small to be kept outside.
A 25 gallon is about $15 here, which is a better deal, more space means slower rate of heating.
You can build your own shade, under the basking dock. But it has be dark shade and enough for twice the turtle's size.

The water will heat up faster than you think in a 3.5 gallon, it can cause harm to your turtle, even with the shade. It's better off getting a bigger container

Hmmm, I am going to target soon today...Hopefully. I'm planning to get a 20 rubbermaid stock tank at least... How much do they cost?

Do you have a lawn? Can you make a fenced in area? If you supervise them outside, then you can make sure they would get some sun and you can bring them in after an hour or so.

About that, is tape (masking, office) safe on the carapace? I let my tortoises roam in the backyard where it's not treated, and I tape a ballon onto their carapace since they are so small, and that way I can see them (but I'm always close by)

I think I need to see a pic of that! I guess for short periods of time it should be OK and masking tape is usually not as sticky as other tapes. They way my RES move around, nothing I would I attach would probably stick for long.
