Herpetology is the scientific study of reptiles and amphibians. Herpetoculture is the art and science of breeding snakes, lizards, turtles, tortoises, amphibians, and other herpetozoa in captivity.
so I would assume that 'herp' is just an abbreviation for 'herpetozoa'

It's a term that's used to refer to both reptiles and amphibians. A herper is a person who's interested in them, keeps them; a herpetologist is a person who studies them. A herp vet is a veterinarian who has specialized training in diseases/conditions specific to them and is able to treat them.
