My male RES is 20 years old and about 9". How long do turtles live anyway? I know it depends on the type of turtle, so as a personally significant point, how long do RES typically live?
RES: Turtley - about 9" (She makes it a mission to measure her. :/)
Musk: Bolt - 4.5"
Mutt: Gaviota - small

We have heard 100 yrs could be possible but I don't think anyone really knows.

Wow! Our pets are bound to outlive us then. Haha, I never thought I might need someone to inherit my turtle. xD

Mine aren't the oldest from what I have seen posted here, but I have had my boys Slick and Spike for 26 years and they were already "full grown". Does anyone know how long it takes them to grow to about 7 inches in length (straight line length)? They are somewhere in their 30's I am guessing!

It is hard to tell unless you know how they were raised and the conditions. My male is 3 yrs old and 5in. scl. I kept and continue to keep him on a strict varying diet. If I had to guess I'd say at the rate he is growing, if he makes it to 7in scl. it would be in two yrs or so. Sliders should grow at a slow rate but are over fed most the time and will grow at a irregularly fast rate. Do your turtles have any pyramiding?

Holy cow.
Great story, though, because it means your turtle has been taken care of for all those years. :D That makes me happy.

The problem is no one can accurately say how long they live, in captivity they die so often that most people don't have the great stories that are coming out on this thread. I'm sure that they can live a long, long time. Tortoises and sea turtles are known to live long lives, so why not fresh water turtles;)

Great story thanks for sharing! I believe turtles will live a long time with the proper care. In the wild their habitats are being threatened, plus pollution of water sources and such, could shorten thier lives a bit. But a captive slider, especially a captive bred slider could live over a 100 years. I would make a educated guess and say they could live to 150+, and to be honest probably more. Unfortunately for us unless the story of these turtles shown above keeps going public non of us will ever know, just because of the fact we would be outlived by our turtles.

Good morning fellow members, first time posting, great site.. I have a RES that a friend gave to me. He found it on a street in Queens NY, probably let go from one of these backyard ponds. I don't know the age at the time but we have had it for 16 years. I was wondering how long do they live? I have her in a 40 gal. acrylic tank with a ramp and plenty of room. I hope to take pictures in the future. The turtle measures 8" from front to back of shell. My son uses gloves to take it out when we change the water.. Once again, good site..

Welcome, you will read and hear turtles can live 40+ yrs. however we really don't know how long they live. Without the correct documentary we probably will never know. I suspect they live over a 100 yrs.

That story is great!!
Wow.
I didn't know they could get bonded like that.
I've been wondering what will happen to our turtles here. I don't know how old any of them are but one; Baby Timmy was hatched in January of 2012. I figure the boys will take Baby Timmy and Jayden-Ranger when they go off to school, though.

61 years old!!!

I would like to hear about some of the feeding habits of those who have very old turtles. My RES Ivana is now 19 years old. I bought her on Canal street NYC as a quarter sized "Japanese turtle".

She is very happy, healthy, bright eyed, and I always imagine she will live to be in her 60s or 70s.

The main question I have for those with long living turtles is the amount of times per week you feed your turtle. We feed ours once/week. I understand that is way below the recommendation, but when I was feeding her 3-4 times/week she was getting overweight. I'm wondering if I should go to twice/week. She's been eating once/week for 10 years now.

Again - she's strong, happy and bright eyed.

We try to vary her diet as much as possible, which means we put her in a bucket, give her leftovers of our food - rice, greens, whatever we were eating that's relatively fresh, and then add a few turtle pellets at the end as a sort of dessert.

You're not saying how much you're actually offering her. I think it's fine to feed often, just use accordingly smaller amounts. When I did my research 15 or so years ago, a lot of the care information varied wildly. It was not -- and I imagine still isn't -- unusual for people to feed once a week, use pinkies, raw meats, etc. I think the longest surviving turtles were fed the least.
