As much as i love my res, as far as care goes I prefer land turtles. Much easier to clean.

I think both turtles/tortoises are absolutely adorable! I have never owned a tortoise, but there is a pet store near my house with a LARGE 20 inch Sulcata tortoise ("Martin") that roams the store. I'm amazed at how he picks up his heavy body to walk on those "elephant" feet. He's so adorable that sometimes I just go in there to visit him. I'm just not used to seeing a hard shelled-creature THAT big and am fascinated by the vegetarian diet (I am a big vegetable eater too). I even bought a Sulcata book just to learn about tortoises and find out how they differ from turtles.

I figure someday if I move to a desert climate like Arizona, I would love to have a Sulcata tortoise like Martin.

I heard from one of my friends that there is some society (probably costs lots and lots of $$$ to join or donations and stuff) that if you are in it and have a donate a few thousand dollars you can get one Galapagos Tortoise. I always wondered if this was true. :-P

I'd guess not. Aren't they an endagered species? Maybe what they mean is you could sponsor one?

Or maybe volunteer to help at a local zoo? It's worth asking the question!

I love turles better because they are smart, and quick and they have so much fun playing in the water. This is a byist decision though, because I have never owned a toroies. They just don't SEEM to be as much fun?!?!?

You obviously haven't met my tortoise "friend" Martin. ;)
(see my post above).

If only I had a house big enough for a Sulcata Tortoise! The giants are fascinating.
