Road turtle!

Amusingly, I was on the way to a barbecue for turtle people, and I saw a RES in the road. The barbecue was held at a home out in the country. We came around a curve and saw something in the road. At first I thought it was a dead mammal of some kind, but then it moved and we saw it was a turtle! It was a large female RES.
I got out to get her out of the road, and she tried to PEE ON ME! (Al only does that when he is really angry.) And this turtle had a bladder on her- she pee'd FOREVER. Fortunately I was holding her at an angle so I only got a little splashed on my toes.
I moved her across the street and we drove on

We all met up at the turtle ranch (theturtleranch.org) and ate and talked and etc. That's about it

It was a party for people on a local turtle & tortoise mailing list.

A female eastern painted laid eggs on the lawn about two weeks ago. I was escorting her back to the brook she came from when I noticed a leach on her shell. I picked her up to get it off and she immediately retracted her head, limbs and tail into her shell. She then let loose with what was like a faucet of water on my sloggers. Never knew a turtle could pee as much as that.
I had heard that the turtle ranch had had a fire and had closed. They reopened (or never did close completely)?

They never closed, but a lot of the turtles/tortoises died. It was awful.
They had just moved to New Mexico, where they had bought a bunch of land to really build a ranch. Only a little while after they got there, there was a fire. Judy was home alone and could not get all the animals out. She had to stand and watch them burn to death. It was really traumatizing.
Tony was still in Texas, either for work or for finishing up with their old house, and he drove to NM, they packed up everything that could be salvaged, and came back to Texas. They lost almost everything they owned in the fire, so a lot of people donated clothes and furniture to them. It was a very hard time. But, they never stopped rescuing turtles and other herps. Many of us donated tanks and reptile stuff.
They have been living in a big place out int he country West of Houston, but now they are moving so they are having a push to adopt out a lot of the animals. Tony has some pink-bellied sidenecks for adoption and I am not sure what else. He told me he had a YBS too, and if it is male and healthy I might take it... I think Al needs a friend.
