So I drive 20min to the only pet store around that carries silkworms. They had none. While I was there I noticed they had a redfoot tort. I've always wanted one. I asked the girl if I could see it and she practically tossed it to me. She didn't seem to know how to handle animals. Anyway, first thing I noticed was that he was VERY cold. It was air conditioned in there and he was almost as cold as the store was. He had no uvb, hardly any light at all, obviously inadequate heating and he actually looked sad. Just made me want to take him home. I know I can't, as I've given my visa quite a beating with new pets but what should I have done? The girl told me they do payment plans there (he was $499) but I don't want to buy anything from there anymore just because of how they keep their animals. I noticed several snakes/lizards that weren't being properly kept too. People just make me angry sometimes

Some people just don't care. I'm sure that girl just thinks oh well its a job and really doesn't care about the animals. That's sad.

Is it a chain or a local store? If its a chain, complain to the management first, if its a local store, then complain to local authorities and organizations. It is unfortunate what some of these animals are put through.

It's a chain. I think most problems are with chains rather than mom and pop type stores. I do need to go back for the worms when they come in because no one else carries them. I'll see if there's a manager there.

At Petland all the fish I get there now dies within a few days and they try and tell me that the water quality is bad (yet my other fish are alive..go figure) and it isn't because the turtle eats them either or beats them (though with the last two that was the case..but not totally sure) So I avoid Petland for all my live fish needs. It seems like they don't care at all about the health of their fish.

Sounds like my local petsmart. Once a great store, but now that they changed their setups to "accomodate for more pets", their quality sucks now...it kills me about the leos though...they used to have a humid hide, calcium, and everything, but now they just throw dry moss in the tank and call it a humid hide

...makes me sick

If it's a chain, I'd to to corporate management. Here, the mom and pop/privately owned stores are worst than the larger chains, which are more visible to the public.

Ok you want a good one, go to Walmart and ask someone to help you with your turtle..they are so dumb!! When I was at wal-mart to get a heater for my tank since I thought the other one was acting up, I overheard a guy talking about how horrible his tank water is etc etc. Finally I heard the word turtle and I was like wait you have a turtle..let me help you out!
First off the wal-mart guy gave the customer little pebble gravel to help keep the debris down..I said get rid of that, and get larger rocks. Then the walmart guy gave the customer a itty bitty filter. I said, how big of a tank do you have? He said 20. I said great so do I! That filter won't work because it is made for fish, fish don't make that much of a mess compared to turtles so you need a bigger filter. I have a 30-60 gallon filter in my tank right now and it works rather well. So he got a 20-40 which was way better compared to the little thing that he had.
So then I said, do you feed your turtle cuttlebone? The walmart guy looked at me like I had lost it. The guy said no so I explained why he should etc etc etc. Yet again the walmart guy decided to put his two cents in. I got tired of this. I said do you even own a turtle? He goes uhhh no. I said ok then, butt out. So I get this guy set up and the only thing good that the walmart guy did was give the guy some water treatment stuff since the water is really nasty. That was it. So hopefully that guy's turtle is better. Plus the walmart guy wanted to sell goldfish to the customer for his turtle. I was like uhhh..big nono there people. Big no no. So hopefully the listend to the help I gave them and they are doing better!

i recently went to michigan and went to a pet store in this small town called Holly. i went in the back to look at the turtles and there was a dead painted, cooter, and RES. That pissed me off so bad i just left yelling at them. i can't see how people do this. They were all babies, too.
