I was just wondering if anyone knows a vet that is actually treating turtles here in the Philippines. I can't find one that is... it's all about cats and dogs.

There is a list in the urgent care section...I'm not sure if it lists vets in the Philippines or not. It's one of the stickys.

There is another member on here from the Philippines and that's what he said about vets. I believe he found one that would see turtles but I'm not sure where he was located. Here's the member's name, b0rn s0 awed. You may want to PM him to see where he took his.

You should ask around... a good pet store may have some references, a local zoo, other veterinarians and herp/reptile societies. Good luck.

Why is it so dang hard to find herps in rural areas on those sites? The only ones I can find are around the Palm Beaches and all the way up to Orlando and the Space Coast if that's what it's called. Can't find anything closer to Fort Pierce, and it's literally a pain going all the way to those places. Vets don't treat exotics in my area, only place I know that has tons of vets treating turtles is in El Paso, Texas (been there a couple of days ago flipping through a phone book, just killing time ) but I didn't lug my turts with me.

I understand completely. I'm an hour from Columbus and so I know that it's going to be a long trip if they ever need to go. I've checked with our regular vet, but he won't see turts. He sees exotic cats and farm animals, not herps. However, I also believe that it would totally be worth the drive for my turts!

No I don't. Shortly after getting my turts I discussed it with my vet. While he doesn't see turtles, he told me that a check up was not necessary. His reasoning was that I am going to be caring for them and I will be observing them. If something is wrong, I will notice. I was told to watch for all of the basic things that others mention on here. Lathargy, excessive basking, red/swollen eyes, etc. He also mentioned that the best preventative I could give my turts was a proper set up.

So, that's just my take on things. I understand why people do check ups, but I choose not to.

I do a checkup every couple of years. For awhile I was in the habit of annual checkups, but my animals are so healthy it's not necessary anymore. I spend time with my turtles almost every day, so if something is wrong I notice. If there is a problem, I would know.

I always recommend that inexperienced keepers get annual checkups, though, because it would be easy for them to miss something important.

Well, we are lucky to have herp vets *at all*. When I got my Sheba 16 yrs ago, there were NO vets for turtles anywhere, and I live in Detroit area (large metro area). I had to learn to just prevent illness by keeping Sheba very clean, warm, and well-fed.

Daniel, how hard have you looked for a herp vet? There are two herp specialists in HOuston alone. I am sure there are vets closer to you than El Paso.

I went on vacation in El Paso, but in the the part of Florida where I live, there are few, if any herps that actually treat somehing else than lizard-like animals. I'll double-check to be sure.

Edit: There are no emergeny vets in my area that treat turtles or reptiles, just cats, dogs, and some rodents.

Well, I checked the phone book again and since I didn't have the patience of calling every single place when 3 out of 4 sites don't treat turtles. So I just checked the ones with websites and I ended up with Kelly's Animal Hospital. They say they treat reptiles, but I'll call to see if they treat turtles.
