Long term care....really long term

I've seen that the RES's live 20 to 40 years. Someone said the other day that they can even live 60 years! I'm afriad that - if we can keep him healthy and safe - our Spotty may outlive us. Has anyone made provision for the long term care of their turts if they are not around? What did you do?

I think there was a topic a couple of months back about something similar... more along the lines if something suddenly happened to an owner.

Thanks Steve. Can you think of a keyword for me to search on? I looked at all the topics in this section in 2006 and nothing seemed relevant.

Thanks so much. I got several good pointers. I'll talk to family about it and write out how to take care of Spot and the dog and the cat too. I think I'll see about making a provision in my will, perhaps entrusting some sort of reptile rescue group with finding a suitable new home for him. I'm in a large metropolitan area and there's probably a group that could handle such a request if I worked it out with them in advance. My husband and I may be in a different age bracket than a lot of the other turtle people on the forum and need to work this all out sooner rather than later!

I found this example of a pet will on TurtleHomes.org, a rescue organization in NY.

That's awesome CountryGirl68! Just exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much. If I find something similar for the area I live in I'll post it. If there isn't something already maybe I can help get something established.
Since we got Spotty, I keep running into people around here with sliders. I just met a woman the other day who has three. I would think other people would want to provide for their turtles over the long term.
I told that woman about this great site, by the way.
Question - what is the source for the quote you sign your comments with?

Hi SpotsMama! I believe it's from the movie 'Finding Nemo'. An adorable animated movie, you should check it out!

Yep, it's from the movie "Finding Nemo". It's a quote made by a sea turtle. It's a cute and funny movie. Check it out if you haven't seen it yet.
(I'm a big Disney fan - have seen that move about 5 times!)
