I'm a newbie mom to a RES. Not sure how old, about 4" in diameter. How do you know what sex they are. "Her" name is Tara. Help!

Gender of RES can be determined by length of shell from head to tail being 4 or more inches...not by diameter. That measurement needs to be straight length on and not curved, like the top shell. After four inches, look for signs of long front claws. Males have longer claws and they also have a longer thicker tail.

It would be helpful if you could post a picture so we could see what Tara looks like to help you determine this.

Long fat tail is a male, males also have long front claws.... females tailes are short and skinny and they have front claws that are about the same length as their back claws.

Now see that's odd because I've got a female but her back claws are longer than her front claws.

Don't feel bad because when my female was growing I was like hey it's a male..because I was just looking at the back claws..then I looked at the front and I was like..uh oh..it's a girl....
